“Digital Transformation in Asset Management – Potential, Strategy and Possible Solutions”

This was the motto of this year’s autumn conference of itechx GmbH on 10 November 2017 at the Hilton Hotel in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Volker Braunberger (Managing Director, itechx GmbH) welcomed approximately 100 guests and outlined the basic content of the symposium with interesting and thought-provoking propositions.

The lectures were opened by Ulrich Rogmans (Senior Manager, itechx GmbH), who spoke about the digitalization in the context of the asset management industry. He outlined why disruptive approaches are necessary and offered a few examples of various strategic paths towards digital transformation.

Dr. Roland F. Krieg (CIO, Fraport AG Frankfurt) held a lecture entitled “Is the digitalization of the airport necessary and if not, why not?”, which illustrated a world of ideas and solutions in the context of digital transformation relating to another industry. In particular, he outlined just how important the available data is and will continue to be in the future. Moreover, he emphasized that digital transformation also calls for a cultural change in dealing with failed approaches to solutions.

Mr. Konrad Sippel (Head of Content Lab, Deutsche Börse AG) addressed the necessary thought patterns and innovative viewpoints speaking against the topic outlined in his lecture on “Datafication at Deutsche Börse”. Using very concrete case studies, he demonstrated the value add that a Content Lab can bring to the business areas. Finally, he offered an interesting view of the heterogeneous skill profile of employees.
Philippe Denis (Chief Digital Officer, BNP Paribas Securities Services S. C. A.) presented a further perspective with his English-language lecture “Digitalization – Revolution or Evolution”, reflecting thoughts on the topics and areas in which digitalization appears to be meaningful and has already been successfully implemented and how disruptive this sometimes has to be in order to create added value.

Rounding off the symposium, a panel discussion titled “Digitalization Strategies: What can the financial world learn from other industries?” was moderated by Andreas Günther (Head of Continental Europe, Broadridge GmbH).

Against the backdrop of digitalization, the regulatory framework conditions must always be in line with the challenges of the respective project, says Dr. Carl-Philipp Eberlein (Lawyer, Hengeler Mueller Partnership of Attorneys at Law). Even when there are often time discrepancies and/or long delays. Delays are a recurring theme throughout the industry, especially when it comes to actively shaping digital transformation. Often, delays are due to existing structures, resources, handling, and long decision-making processes.

Proven to be extremely popular, the itechx symposium dealt with current issues and topics relating to capital management companies and custodians. This year, a new momentum was given by the “non-industry-specific” lecture by Dr. Krieg. The symposium format will be selectively continued in the following years.
